Minecraft Console Sales Pass PC, Series Nears 54 Million Copies Sold
Mojang's Patrick Geuder Saga, who heads up data analysis at the Minecraft studio, announced some new statistics about the popular sandbox game today on Twitter.
"Minecraft console editions together just passed Minecraft for PC/Mac," he said. "And across all platforms, we've sold almost 54 million copies."
On console, Minecraft is currently available on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and versions of the game are coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita later this summer. There's still no word on if Minecraft is ever going to come to Nintendo platforms like the Wii, Wii U, or 3DS.
Mojang did not share details regarding how the 54 million figure breaks down between platforms. Minecraft is available on a multitude of systems, including Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC/Mac, iOS, Android, and Raspberry Pi. The Xbox 360 version alone has sold more than 12 million copies.
Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson recently spent more than $40,000 to buy an extremely rare copy of an unreleased Aphex Twin vinyl LP. It comes during prosperous times for Mojang, as the studio made a whopping $326 million last year.
A Minecraft movie is also in the works at Warner Bros. The Lego Movie producer Roy Lee is attached to the project to produce it, though there's no other details available about the film just yet.
