Ulrich Schulze, managing director of progaming at ESL discusses ESL One on the Dota 2 subreddit
A lot of attention was directed towards ESL One the upcoming LAN that will take place in the Commerzbank Arena this June, as commentator Toby 'TobiWan' Dawson urged fans to set their sights on tournaments aside from Valve's own TI4 event which has had its initial prize pool increased to over $6,000,000 and which will take place close to ESL One.
We are making almost no money off the Compendium, it goes into prize pool and to the artists. So we never had intended to use it as a money making tool. Neither do we feel this way about Dota 2 in general: We invested more than $500,000 into our tournaments last year, and we took a big financial risk with the stadium this time.
The complaints Schulze tackled were the four major ones that had been brought up in Dawson's original thread, which included: Setting the event so close to TI4, lack of value for purchasing the compendium and ESL playing a part in strongarming MLG into cancelling their Dota 2 tournament at MLG Anaheim.
It might seem that way, but TI4 probably had a bigger role in this than we did. It takes place in the same geography as MLG Anaheim, it got moved to take place earlier, and it reduces the amount of time teams have to prepare.
