DreamHack and Akamai join forces to highlight data security

DreamHack has announced it will partner with Akamai Technologies at Dreamhack Summer in Jönköping, from June 15-17. 

The partnership will see Akamai share data security insights and analysis of the threat landscape for the global gaming and esports industry. Akamai will be supporting DreamHack’s B2B initiatives at DreamHack Summer, with both parties also to work together closely on upcoming events. 

Martin McKeay, Security Researcher at Akamai and Editorial Director of the ‘State of the Internet/Security Report, commented “One reason we believe the gaming industry is an attractive target for hackers is because criminals can easily exchange in-game items for profit. Furthermore, gamers are a niche demographic known for spending money, so their financial status is also a tempting target.”

According to the Akamai 2019 State of the Internet / Security Web Attacks and Gaming Abuse Report, hackers have targeted the gaming industry by carrying out 12 billion credential stuffing attacks against gaming websites within the 17 months analysed in the report (November 2017 – March 2019).

“DreamHack is a major influencer in the video game industry through our 15 global events that will welcome approximately 400,000 visitors in 2019. DreamHack has also announced partnerships with Doritos, Monster Energy and Twitch for DreamHack Summer. The three-day event will see include multiple esports tournaments including the DreamHack Mobile Series, CS:GO DreamHack Open and FIFA 2019 Nordic Masters.
