Clash Royale League returns for a second season
Supercell has announced that the Clash Royale League (CRL) will be making a return for a second season, following last year’s $1 million (~£750,000) debut.
From March 21-26, Clash Royale players will be competing on the mobile game for a minimum of 20 wins, similarly to the previous season. Winners from the Clash Royale League Challenge will be invited to join a professional league and team to advance to the CRL Online Qualifiers.
Players who are successful through the Online Qualifiers will be invited to the World Cyber Games Finals, held in Xi’an, China on July 18-21.
Supercell debuted their first season of Clash Royale Esports, where 44 teams across the world including Team Liquid, G2 Esports and Fnatic participated. Despite the big names, Chinese organisation Nova Esports became champions in both CRL 2018 Spring Season and CLR 2018 Fall Season. They carried their good form to the World Finals in December but came second in their group, falling against Vivo Keyd and Immortals. However, in the playoffs, they progressed through to face Vivo Keyd once again in the grand final. They only dropped one map throughout the series and finished their season as champions.
Alongside Clash Royale, Supercell is teaming up with ESL to put on a Clash of Clans World Championship this year, which will include a $1 million prize pool.
Esports Insider says: Mobile Esports is growing rapidly and having the chance to play Clash Royale in a competitive format has developed a successful path for Supercell and their esports journey. Adding their Clash of Clans World Championship planned for this year, it becomes more of an inspiration for other mobile game developers to look into a competitive format for everyone.
