ESL appoints Thomas Schmidt as Chief Commercial Officer
ESL has announced that Thomas Schmidt has joined the ESL executive team as the Chief Commercial Officer effective of April 1, 2019.
Previously, Thomas Schmidt spent 16 years in developing the UEFA Champions League commercialisation and distribution. He also joined ESL as a Non-Executive Board Member in October 2018 where he worked with the team from a strategic angle. Schmidt provided expert advice on delivering best-in-class coverage and sponsorship solutions for ESL’s esports leagues and tournaments.
In his new role as Chief Commercial Officer, Schmidt will be globally responsible for managing the ESL Sales teams and expand all existing and new brand partners, as well as media distribution revenue streams.
Speaking on his appointment, Schmidt said: “Over the past few years, esports enjoyed explosive growth in popularity all around the world. However, the commercial development of esports is still in its infancy and is just starting to realise its full potential.
“ESL is the global powerhouse of esports and in my view best placed to drive the sport and lead its commercial direction. I’m delighted to join ESL’s vibrant team of ambitious and talented people.”
David Neichel, co-CEO, ESL, added: “We are pleased to welcome an experienced and innovative leader as Thomas to the ESL team. Thomas will help us accelerate our ambitious plans to grow ESL business across the globe, delivering high-value services to our customers and further build a highly professional commercial team. Thomas is also someone who shares our culture and values and who is a great fit for the team.”
Esports Insider says: Hiring from within a company is always a smart choice. Having someone who knows and understands the brand inside and out is key. Thomas Schmidt’s years of experience in and out of ESL will no doubt be a huge asset in his new role as Chief Commercial Officer.
