Epic Games announces $500K Fortnite World Cup Warmup
Ahead of the Fortnite World Cup Online Open tournaments starting April 13, Epic Games has announced the Fortnite World Cup Warmup.
Boasting a $500,000 (£381,145) prize pool, the event will act as the last online practice tournament before online qualifiers get underway. The full ruleset for the Fortnite World Cup Warmup will be unveiled later this week.
The Fortnite World Cup Warmup will span over April 6-7th, starting with the duos that have reached Division 6 in Contender’s League competing in the semi-finals. The finals will include the top 1,500 duos from each region, taking place on the second day.
Epic Games revealed the details for the Fortnite World Cup earlier this year. Yielding a prize pool of $30 million (£23 million), the event will be hosted over July 26-28th with 100 solo players and 50 duos heading to New York City.
In the same announcement, the developer reveals that it would be hosting 10 weekly online qualifiers starting April 13th – each of which would have $1,000,000 (£767,305) up for grabs. It will continue to give out $1,000,000 (£767,305) each week through to the end of the year in an effort to reach its $100 million (£74 million) target.
Esports Insider says: It’s crazy to see an online practice event with a prize pool that’s a larger sum than what some games distribute in months. Epic Games is obviously fine with giving away copious amounts of money, but – thankfully – this time the developer is distributing the money more generously this time round.
